Transitional interior design is a combination of traditional and contemporary design which results in a classic, timeless style. Furniture has a simple yet sophisticated quality to it featuring both straight and rounded lines paired with diverse fabrics. The scale of the furniture is fairly large without being intimidating and there is no excess ornamentation or decoration which allows the furniture’s simple, sophisticated design qualities to shine.

There is a distinct lack of color with transitional design which allows for exciting, interesting textures to be introduced with the fabric selection. Popular fabric choices can range from ultrasuedes, to nubby chenilles and graphic patterns. The absence of color is meant to create a clean, elegant atmosphere, so transitional design focuses mainly on neutral palettes featuring colors like taupe, tan, cream, and deep browns.

Accessories are kept at a minimum. Popular accents for a transitional home include, but are not limited to: simple trays, elegant candleholders, white mats to set off photography, and elegant plants (like orchids). Transitional design exudes traditional elegance combined with organic, contemporary simplicity.
